A 4D scan is a type of ultrasound scan that's used to observe a baby in the womb during the mid-to-late stages of pregnancy (typically between 24 and 32 weeks gestation).
This type of scan allows you to bond with your baby and get a detailed look at them months before the birth!
Why is it called a 4D scan?
4D scans are so called because you don't just get a static 3D image—you actually get to watch your baby moving around in real time!
During the scan, you'll be watching your own baby as they wriggle, kick, or suck their thumb. Footage captured during a 4D scan footage can be extremely detailed: you will see your baby's facial features for the very first time, and if you're lucky, you might even catch them smiling!
This can be a very special moment for an expecting mother, as it allows you to look at your child while they are still in the womb. A 4D scan can also be a lovely way to introduce your baby to any siblings or other family members.
How to prepare for a 4D scan
Want to make sure your 4D scan goes smoothly? There are a few things you can do to prepare for the scan and maximise your chances of getting a good look at your son or daughter.
Approximately 20 minutes before your ultrasound appointment, drink a sugary drink and treat yourself to a bar of chocolate. The sugar in your bloodstream will help to get your baby moving around, making it easier to get a good picture. Arriving with a full bladder will also assist with the scan imagery.
You should also think about your clothing. You will need to expose your abdomen during the scan, so wearing a two-piece outfit (e.g. a T-shirt and jeans) will help to preserve your privacy.
