The NHS will typically offer an expectant mother two free ultrasound scans over the course of her pregnancy: one at 12 weeks, and another at 20 weeks. However, a lot of parents-to-be find themselves wanting additional opportunities to check on the condition of their unborn baby, and that’s where private pregnancy scans come in.
Private ultrasound clinics (like First Encounters in Cardiff) enable families to book additional scans and keep a closer eye on their newest member. This can be particularly important to mothers who have previously miscarried, but that isn’t always a factor—some families visit private ultrasound clinics simply because the extra scans help to enhance their pregnancy experience.
One of the biggest deciding factors when choosing which private clinic to visit is the price. The cost of private scans varies quite a bit depending on the type of scan(s) you choose and where you go.
Here at First Encounters, we offer a range of scans at competitive prices, ranging from £89 to £130 per scan. All of our scans are available to book with only a £25 deposit.

Early Pregnancy Scans (7 to 16 Weeks)
Prices from £99
These dating and reassurance scans are tailored for the early stages of pregnancy. Our EarlyReassure™ scan (7 to 14 weeks) aims to determine viability, check for multiple foetuses, exclude the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy, and visualise heartbeat and movement. If you’re a bit further along, our Date&Wellbeing™ scan (14 to 16 weeks) is designed to check on your baby’s position and wellbeing.
Our trained sonographer will also take your baby’s measurements: crown-to-rump length (CRL) up to 14 weeks, or head circumference (HC) and femur length (FL) if you’re between 14 and 16 weeks. This will enable us to provide an estimated delivery date.
Whether you visit us before or after your first NHS ultrasound appointment, we hope our early scans will give you peace of mind and help you to settle into your pregnancy.

Wellbeing Scans (16 to 40 Weeks)

Our private wellbeing scans are designed to check the wellbeing of your baby after your initial NHS dating scan.
During your scan, we’ll carry out observational checks to give you extra peace of mind and reassure you of your baby’s continued healthy development. If you choose our Growth&Wellbeing™ scan, we’ll also take the following growth measurements:
- Head circumference (HC)
- Abdominal circumference (AC)
- Femur length (FL)
- Growth plotted against average centile
- Estimated foetal weight

Gender Scans (16 to 32 Weeks)

These diagnostic ultrasound scans are designed to check on your baby’s development and general wellbeing. They also include a complimentary gender reveal (optional).
At the end of your private gender scan, you’ll take home a Digital Foetal Assessment Report plus the following souvenirs:
- Glossy black-and-white photos of your baby
- At least one complimentary video clip
- Gender reveal scratch card (optional)
- Password for Photocloud™ where you’ll find digital downloads of your scan images
We also offer a ‘Secret Gender’ option in case you want to save the surprise for a gender reveal party.

4D Scans (24 to 32 Weeks)

Using advanced HDlive 3D/4D imaging, we can offer you an astonishingly detailed look at your unborn baby. This is a wonderful opportunity to get a better idea of what your child might look like when he or she finally arrives! We also offer optional complimentary 2D baby sexing during all our 4D bonding scans.
If you attend a private 4D scan at the First Encounters clinic, you’ll leave with a Digital Foetal Assessment Report plus the following souvenirs:
- Glossy 3D colour photos of your baby
- At least one complimentary video clip
- Password for Photocloud™ where you’ll find digital downloads of your scan images
Additional souvenirs can be added to your scan package at any time up to and including the day of your appointment.
